Importing spectra into Word
and other Microsoft applcations
UWZ 11/27/98
First you create a postscript file from your spectrum. Choose a plotter, and plot the spectrum, scale, integrals, title, etc. MAKE SURE THAT MAIN MENU/FILE POINTS TO A SPECTROMETER DIRECTORY, NOT A CDROM DIRECTORY. Then type
"page('filename.ps')". This saves the spectra as postscript .ps format.
Many programs don't import inmages in postscript format, and those that do usually have very limited options once the postscript image is imported. Therefore, we recommend that you change the format of the postscript file to another format. TIFF format usually retains the most resolution, and is recommended. However, BEFORE changing formats, be sure that your graphics program (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) can handle the new format.
To change formats on the NMR Facility datastations, click and hold the right mouse button in the background area and select programs/image tool. Open your postscript file. Rotate as needed (some PC/Mac programs do NOT let you rotate imported images). Draw a box around the area that you want to save: This is a good opportunity to cut out big areas of white space around your spectrum, or perhaps even to cut off the scale---the numbers in teh scale supplied by Varian are often too small for your final figure, so you may have to erase these numbers and add new ones anyway. Save your image as a new file type.
Transfer your file to your PC or Mac. On the PC, use the Command Prompt and telnet to the spectrometer where you saved your data. On the Mac, use Fetch. Ask the NMR Facility Staff for assistance.
You can also transfer your file to an SGI workstation and do the file fomat translation using XV. On the SGI, open a desktop Unix Shell. Type "xv filename.ps" to read in your postscript data. Resave them in other formats, which Word, etc., can read. Exit your session.
A third option is to use Mest-Re-C on the PC; Mest-Re-C is good freeware program for processing 1D NMR data. Transfer your NMR data to a PC (fid, log, procpar, and text files) into a directory with the same name as the data set on the Sun workstations (e.g., filename.fid). Get Mest-Re-C from the NMR Facility. Work up your data (Apodize, Fourier Transform, phase under the tools menu). Copy your spectrum to teh clipboard as a metafile. Open your other Microsoft applicaiton (Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Paste Special as a metafile. The BIG advantage to using this method is that the spectrum can be manipulated as a separate object---for example, the color, linewidth, etc. of the spectrum can be changed within PowerPoint!
Yet another option is to use MacFID on a Mac. This should work similarly to Mest-Re-C on the PC, although the NMR Facility Stafff has had less experience with this program.
Now you can insert the pictures as files in your word document. Here are the results of different formats. Please note that the picture sizes were reduced by changing the boxes in this Word program.
