How to Print Stacked Spectra with Lines in Different Colors

August 12, 1998, IU NMR Facility, prepared by MDP and UWZ

Outline:
The following steps are involved:

  1. Read in your stacked spectra and define the dimensions
  2. Define the regions that you wish to color in
  3. Set up the printer and color
  4. Prepare the postscript file
  5. Send file to the printer or import into other programs
1. Read in your stacked spectra and define the dimensions
You read in your stacked spectra in the usual way. If you do not have the data for the stacked form then see "How to make a whitewashed stacked plot". Define the plotting parameters such as (numbers are examples. Watch out! The numbers in mm are only approximately describing the final plot. Leave yourself some space!) wc=150 sc=90 ho=-5 vo=10 Fourier transform and display the spectra: wft dsww('all').

2. Define the regions that you wish to color in:
To do this you use the resets in the integration mode. Therefore click on: Main Menu --> Display --> Part Int --> resets Use the left mouse button to define the regions that you want plotted. Then leave the integral mode by clicking Full Int --> No Int.

3. Set up the printer and color
I recommend first to plot your spectra in black and white to see if the parameters given cause problem. For black and white you can skip to the next point. For color plots click Main Menu --> Plotter --> color. Answer the question Will you accept the $1 charge for each color plot? The actual plotting will cause the charge. Here we will only prepare a postscript file which is free of charge. Click on Plot --> Postscript. Then choose what you want to color (Spectrum, Scale, etc.) and the color. Then Exit the color mode.

4. Prepare the postscript file
Type plpartsstack to start the macro. Answer the questions whether you want to plot the displayed fraction of the spectrum. To plot in several colors you can repeatedly execute point 3 and 4 until you have all fractions and their colors loaded into the plot buffer. If you want the scale under the total spectrum type pscale (Watch out! The default color in the color mode for the scale is white, change it to black.) Finish by typing page('') (just page for prints on the regular printers).

5. Send file to the printer or import into other programs
You are ready to send the file to the printer or import it to any program that takes postscript files. You may check whether you are satisfied with the plot from our Silicon Graphics by downloading the file with ftp and using xv on it. Currently the color plotter is in the Duplicating Office. Pick up your plot between 8:00-12:00am and 1:00-5:00pm and sign the printer log.
