The Mission of the NMR Facility

The NMR Facility serves to support NMR-related research and instruction throughout the Department of Chemistry and Indiana University through five responsibilities:

NMR Facility Staff Profile

Staff Member Primary Responsibilities
John Tomaszewski administration, general training, computer software & hardware maintenance, spectrometer maintenance
Ulli Werner-Zwanziger advanced instruction, research collaboration, development of NMR spectroscopic techniques, spectrometer maintenance
Frank Gao general training, research collaboration, development of NMR spectroscopic techniques, spectrometer maintenance

NMR Facility User Profile

Type of User Occasional General Advanced Expert
Research Collaboration YES NO NO NO
Conduct 1D experiment without staff YES YES NO NO
Conduct routine 2D experiment without staff YES YES YES NO
Conduct non-routine experiments without staff YES YES YES YES
Basic Training NO YES YES YES
Advanced Training NO NO YES YES
Experiment Development NO NO NO YES

Short-Term Objectives

  1. Develop computerized spectrometer scheduling.
  2. Expand maintenance routines to check for minor problems (e.g., ensure that printers work, verify VT operation, etc.) and to maintain a high quality of performance (PFG, shaped pulses, etc.)

Long-Term Objectives

  1. Develop non-routine multi-dimensional experiments as needed by the users; stay concurrent with advances in NMR spectroscopy.
  2. Improve spectrometer output (printing options, spectra-to-word-processor, etc)
  3. Compile instructional resources for the web site and for implementation in the facility.
  4. Compile facility documentation in hardcopy and HTML format.
