I400 Probe Contaminated

The probe on the I400 got contaminated by some user(s) lately. The contaminates give rise to two proton peaks around 0ppm. If you have broken a sample or had your sample spilled into the probe on the I400, you should contact me (Frank) or Doug immediately. I need to figure out an appropriate solvent for cleanup.

I’m going to work on the probe cleanup tomorrow. For time being, you can still use the I400 for 13C, 19F, and 31P. You can also do 1H on the I400 if you don’t care the small extra peaks around 0ppm.

VXR400 Sample Ejection Problem Fixed

Some users had problems with sample ejection on the VXR400 in the past few days. This was caused by sticky chemical deposits formed inside the sample delivery barrel and the probe.

Please do your part to prevent this from happening. ALWAYS WIPE YOUR NMR TUBE (and the spinner if needed) with Kimwipes and ethanol before putting it into the magnet. Report problems to the NMR staff promptly.

I will schedule sessions according to your preference so please email Doug. if you’re interested with a time preference. 10am to noon has worked well in the past.

NMR Rates

As a result of analyzing 2011-2012 NMR use, we will be increasing NMR rates $1/hour across the board except for the Gem300 which will have the same rate as the 400s. The increase is due to increased cryogen costs and to be able to cover probe repair or replacement. We expect the rate increase to be effective starting September 2012.

Gem 300

As some of you know, we plan to retire the Gem 300 in about a year. The cost to maintain it is high versus the very low use. We’re still considering backup to the I400 for 31P and 19F which is currently this instrument. Please plan accordingly and as always we welcome feedback on this issue!
